Well done to both the Senior and Lower School teams who competed in the Schools Challenge Quiz this year.

Schools Challenge is the national general knowledge competition for schools across the country, founded by Colin Galloway in 1978. Divided into Senior and Junior competitions, Schools Challenge uses a match format that is loosely based on University Challenge. The questions are set in rounds, each comprising a starter and three team questions (often called “bonus” questions), normally with some common theme.

This year, the Senior team (Arthur (captain), Hugo, Charlie, George) had early victories against King’s, Worcester and King’s, Canterbury but met with an unfortunate defeat at the hands of KES Birmingham.

Meanwhile, the Lower School team (Alastair (captain), Alex, Felix and Jay) fared excellently. Wins against Bury Grammar and northern quizzing titans, Lancaster Royal Grammar, saw them win through to the national finals at The Hall School, London, in school exam week. There they defeated Hampton and City of London Boys, to reach the final. History is indeed cyclical though, and in a repeat of the 2009 final, MCS emerged as National Runners-up against a very strong team from our Cambridge rivals, The Perse.
