Welcome to MCS

Magdalen College School Oxford is an exceptional community where the academically able learn how to achieve remarkable things within an intellectually stimulating environment.

Founded in 1480, we are a selective independent day school in Oxford for pupils aged 7 to 18. We are a diverse and inclusive community and are committed to ensuring an MCS education is open to the brightest pupils, regardless of background. We offer generous help with fees and are proud to have won an Independent Schools of the Year Award for Social Mobility.

This is an exciting moment in the history of MCS, as we prepare to become fully co-educational in time for our 550th anniversary and look ahead to welcoming girls into the Junior School (Years 3 and 4) in 2027 and Senior School (Year 7) in 2030.

Location

Situated in the heart of Oxford, MCS draws inspiration from the global university city that surrounds it. Once a department of Magdalen College, we continue to enjoy links across the city and with the Colleges just beyond our gates. We are conveniently located on several major bus routes through the city centre, operated by Oxford Bus Company and Stagecoach. Alternatively, Oxford train station is a 25-minute walk away.

Academic Excellence

MCS consistently ranks among the top independent senior schools. Our academic reputation is built on outstanding results at both A Level and GCSE. We achieve this not by simply teaching to the curriculum, but by encouraging pupils to reach far beyond it.

Our History

Founded in 1480 by William Waynflete, we are now well into our sixth century. Our former pupils include scholars, war heroes, musicians, Olympians, a Nobel Prize laureate, a Hollywood film director, and a saint. As the Good School’s guide review states, MCS is ”Steeped in history but not weighed down by it”. We pride ourselves on our forward-thinking education ethos and our contribution to social mobility.
