Extra-curricular activities are a key part of an MCS boy’s happiness and development. They provide the opportunity to explore interests, to socialise, to work collaboratively, to learn new skills, to develop resilience and to improve critical and creative skills.

We value this so much that we devote Thursday afternoons to activities in addition to our many lunchtime and after-school clubs.

Activities Afternoon

Our Activities Afternoon is designed to offer pupils additional breadth and balance in the curriculum. We have a wide range of activities on offer during the year ranging from Forest School to Climbing. Some are year group dependent such as Martial Arts and Young Enterprise, whilst others such as Drama and Strategy Games take place on Thursday afternoon every year. It is a wonderful time to branch out into new activities near the end of a busy week and is very popular with pupils, parents and staff.

Junior School Clubs

In addition to Activities Afternoon, we run a comprehensive club system. On Mondays, we have clubs within our school day with pupils having the opportunity to pick clubs from the following list: chess, natural history, word games, Lego, debating, Magdalen Blazer (our school magazine), music appreciation, ICT coding and games.

During the rest of the week, there are plenty of clubs in all areas of school life ranging from music to sports to chess to ones based around academic subjects. We also have a strong tradition of entering competitions to enrich our pupils’ interests further. In 2019, we reached the national finals in both literary and general knowledge competitions.
