As ever, pupils in the Junior School had great fun and created some fantastic costumes for World Book Day this year.

The day presents an amazing opportunity to celebrate our love of reading, with the boys arriving at school on Thursday morning dressed in a wonderful array of literature-inspired costumes. I was particularly impressed with the effort that had been put into creating them at home, and it was so great to see so many boys take on the ‘reuse, reduce, recycle’ challenge I had set over half term.

We started the day with an extended assembly which opened with a special visitor in the form of Roald Dahl’s Miss Trunchbull. The boys found themselves being scrutinised and put through their paces, until The Trunchbull was distracted by the infiltration of a clever girl known as Matilda in the assembly gathering. It was only the brave intervention of Miss Honey that prevented everyone from ending up in Trunchbull’s chokey!

During the assembly, members of staff shared their memories of books they enjoyed when they were children. Enid Blyton was a firm favourite, but the boys got to hear about a wide range of authors, genres and how connected their teachers still felt to those titles.

Pupils then spent time in form rooms, scrapbooking a book of their choice. They were asked to create an eye-catching visual record which reviewed their favourite book, including things like; a short review, the cover, themes, character descriptions, illustrations… the choice was theirs! The project aimed to celebrate reading for pleasure by collating four scrapbooks – one for each year group – which will live in the library to be shared and used by the boys to support future reading recommendations. I am astounded by the creativity and detail included in so many of these reviews and cannot wait to see them all collected together in their albums for us all to enjoy!

Pupils got the opportunity to choose a World Book Day title to take home

After morning break, the boys had the opportunity to choose a World Book Day title to take home with them as a gift from the library – I hope they enjoy whichever title they chose! Afterwards, the Reading Carousel began, which is always a favourite occasion of mine. Twelve members of staff kindly volunteered to read an extract from one of their favourite books (many of which had already been discussed in assembly) and small groups of boys ventured to all corners of the Junior School to enjoy their chosen reading. It is such a pleasure during this time to wander around School House; peeping into these special story-time sessions and watching the joy on everyone’s faces as they shared a book together.

Thank you to everyone who helped make our World Book Day celebrations so memorable – from the efforts at home with costumes, the wonderful creativity in classrooms, and the boundless energy and enthusiasm of the Junior School staff – who enter into the spirit of the day every year and help bring it all together in such a spectacular manner!
