As part of Oxford Festival of the Arts 2023, Magdalen College School returned to Oxford Playhouse from 29 June to 1 July with the world premiere of a new adaptation for the stage of J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit. Written by Alex Thomas and John Mann, Tolkien’s original songs inspired the rich musical score, and it was fitting that the premiere was held in the city where the author lived, taught and wrote.

London, 1940. At the height of the Blitz a boy and his grandfather take refuge in a small air-raid shelter. And in this hole in the ground begins a story. A tale of one small person’s courage and perseverance as he embarks upon an unexpected journey which brings him face to face with unimaginable dangers. As our story unfolds, the world of rubble and bombed-out houses becomes the magical land of Middle-earth.

Praised for the skill of the cast and crew, as well as the ingenuity of this adaption of the classic story into a musical within a WWII setting, the production received resoundingly positive reviews, including a five-star review in the Oxford Mail.

"[The Hobbit] captivated audiences at the Oxford Playhouse with a production of JRR’s classic which thrilled, charmed and delighted as it carried us away on its enchanting odyssey".

Tim Hughes, Oxford Mail

During the production of the musical, MCS worked with 10 local primary schools to familiarise more than 500 children with the story before they see it on stage. Copies of David Wenzell’s beautifully illustrated graphic novel were distributed, as well as supporting materials produced by MCS Sixth Form pupils. As the adaptation begins in London during the Blitz, information and activities relating to this period of history were provided to the primary school children too, as well as details about Tolkien’s life and works. The supplementary resources included a creative task that was completed prior to the children attending the performance on 29th June, for which prizes were awarded on stage for the most imaginative submissions.
