MCS pupils, parents and staff have been working hard through their summer holidays to make sure that the Rose Hill Community Larder is well-staffed with volunteers.

Our cheerful and enthusiastic team have welcomed members of the OX4 community every Tuesday afternoon at Rose Hill Community Centre.

Moving furniture, unpacking crates of groceries, sorting mountains of fresh fruit and vegetables, taking orders and filling shopping bags are just some of the activities that our volunteers have been able to help with.

The school runs Rose Hill Community Larder in partnership with the South Oxfordshire Food and Education Alliance (SOFEA), which was co-founded by MCS alumnus, Richard Kennell. SOFEA’s mission is to enable the transformation of people’s lives and their communities with a focus on young people, through work, well-being, study, and purpose projects such as community larders.

During term-time, through the school’s Community Service Organisation (CSO), Lower Sixth pupils spend one afternoon each week volunteering in the community. A number of pupils have chosen to continue through their summer holidays.

‘Volunteering at the Larder is interesting and enjoyable. We are reducing food waste and helping local Oxford residents save money. It’s really worthwhile because we get to interact with the community and understand how partnerships improve the quality of life for everyone.’ Liza B, Sixth Form volunteer.

Some of the Larder members bring along surplus produce from their gardens and allotments, such as kale and rosemary. By sharing these with their neighbours, they are creating and sustaining local connections. Steve Everett, another MCS alumnus, is a happy regular at the Larder and comes every week to pick up his groceries, fruit and vegetables.

‘The Larder definitely makes a difference. We shall be encouraging others to try it – we particularly like the recycling, non-consumerist ethos and community support. Thanks everyone, great service!’

‘The Rose Hill Community Larder is a great opportunity to work together with young people so they can learn about living in a sustainable and healthy way, and understand why it is important to reduce food waste and participate in local community activities. The support of the MCS is vital for this local charity. Thank you to everyone for all your hard work!’
