Recent leavers and the Class of 2018 returned to the school on Saturday 8 September for a football match, followed by a curry lunch. This was a great opportunity for them to meetup before the start of the university term, and for many it was their first event as a new Old Waynflete.

For the first time, the Waynflete Office also organised a careers workshop in the Studio before the lunch. The workshop was run by MCS Parent and CEO of PUSH, Steven Hyde. Steven’s main presentation included tips on ensuring that attendee LinkedIn profiles attract recruiters.

He also talked about how accelerating digital innovation is challenging the jobs environment and the very nature of work. According to Steven, 60% of jobs that will exist in ten years’ time have not yet been created. In one example, he mentioned that it took 75 years for telephone systems to reach 50 million users, while the mobile game Pokémon Go reached that level in a mere 19 days.

Alongside the workshop, MCS parent David Collins, who is a professional photographer by trade– and a familiar sight on school field for the whole school photograph –provided head-and-shoulder photos for attendee LinkedIn profiles. In advance, OWs were advised to bring business attire for their photo. Many thanks to Alan Cooper who provided a suitable jacket and a selection of ties for those who had forgotten to bring one, which ended up being well-used!

Over 30 YOWs played football before the networking event and lunch. The recent leavers scored some spectacular goals to stay in the game at 3-3 at half-time, but eventually succumbed 8-3 to the more experienced OWs.

It was great to see over a hundred young OWs in total at the match and curry lunch.
