The School went stateside this Easter, as our choristers travelled to Texas with the Choir of Magdalen College and our OWs gathered at The New York Times building for a special drinks reception hosted by the company’s CEO and President, Mark Thompson.
In his welcome speech for the latter event, held on Wednesday 11 April, Mark emphasised the continued importance of journalism in a constantly-evolving modern world, and asserted the necessity for consumers to read arguments and opinions that they do not agree with.
The School was delighted that a varied list of guests were able to attend, ranging from OWs and Friends to current pupils and parents, and spanning the ages, from a boy currently in the Upper Fourth to an OW who left the School in 1952. Moreover, attendees made the journey to New York from far and wide, whether across states, or across continents (as was the case for those who made the trip from the UK).
All who attended were astonished by the venue, and, in particular, the publication’s Pulitzer wall, which boasts 125 prize-winners and citations, more than any other news organisation. Soon after the School’s drinks reception, staff at The New York Times were again commended at the 2018 Pulitzers with the awards for Public Service, National Reporting and Editorial Cartooning.
Our choristers, meanwhile, brought their magnificent vocal talents to the churches of Austin and Dallas as part of Magdalen College Choir’s tour to Texas.
In an exceedingly busy schedule, which included a concert at Shepherd of the Hills Church in Austin, and two morning services and a concert in one day at St Michael’s Church, Dallas, the choristers enjoyed all that Texas had to offer over the course of their eight day tour, and even returned to the UK sporting Stetsons.
