We are delighted to announce that during the coming decade Magdalen College School, Oxford (MCS) will become fully co-educational, offering places to high-achieving boys and girls as we prepare to commemorate our 550th anniversary in 2030.
Founded in 1480 as an academically ambitious school for children of all backgrounds, this decision reflects our long-term strategic planning for the school and is a natural next step as we celebrate 15 successful years of co-education in the Sixth Form. It coincides with the first of our bursary fundraising targets – £15million in 2030 – furthering our mission to support financially any child who will thrive here.
Our transition to full co-education will be gradual and is subject to a Material Change process via the Department for Education. We look forward to welcoming girls into Year 3 and Year 4 in September 2027, and Year 7 in September 2030 – joining our existing flourishing cohort of Sixth Form girls, who make a strong and positive impact on life at MCS.
Bob Price, Chair of Governors, said:
“MCS is a remarkable school. As Governors, we are privileged to be the custodians of the school’s long and distinguished record, and I am delighted that, as we approach our 550th year, we will be welcoming both boys and girls to enjoy the stimulation and excitement of life here. By opening the school to all young people who can flourish at MCS, we are honouring our legacy and enriching our community for generations to come.”
"This is an exciting time for everyone at MCS"
