As part of this year’s Remembrance Day commemorations, we welcomed Mrs Marjorie Glasgow BEM, Lord-Lieutenant of Oxfordshire and members of the Fox-Russell family to a ceremony to honour former pupil and chorister Captain John Fox-Russell, VC MC .

Andrew Fox-Russell (great-great-nephew) and Michael Fox-Russell (great-nephew) of war hero John Fox-Russell joined our other guests as part of the School’s Remembrance Day commemorations. Wreaths were laid by the Lord-Lieutenant on behalf of Her Majesty, OW (2009) Captain William Wynell-Mayow on behalf of the Royal Army Medical Corps and Andrew and Michael Fox-Russell.

John Fox Russell, born in 1893 was elected a chorister at MCS in 1904. He spent three years at MCS before moving to Cumbria.

Fox-Russell was commissioned in the Royal Army Medical Corps with the 6th Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers. He took part in the First Battle of Gaza and tended to the wounded under heavy fire. He was later awarded the Military Cross. On 6 November 1917 during a large battle at Tel-esh-Sheria (Third Battle of Gaza), Fox-Russell died after repeatedly attending men and carrying them back to the British lines, he was 24. He was posthumously awarded the VC. His citation read ‘For most conspicuous bravery displayed in action until he was killed. Captain Russell repeatedly went out to attend the wounded under murderous fire from snipers and machine-guns, and in many cases, when no other means were at hand, carried them in himself, although almost exhausted. He showed the greatest possible degree of valour.’

The Fox-Russell stone is laid close to the Chavasse stone which commemorates another former MCS pupil, Captain Noel Chavasse VC and Bar. Chavasse is one of only three people to have been awarded a Victoria Cross twice.
