Careers education got creative today, with a presentation on careers in music from Fari Chiketa and Riley Viljoen from WaterBear The College of Music.
Proudly ‘run by musicians, for musicians’, WaterBear’s courses, offered in partnership with Falmouth University, are designed to support musicians, artists and industry professionals develop meaningful careers within music – a sector which, in the UK alone, supports over 200,000 jobs.
Presenters and professional musicians Fari and Riley started by discussing general trends in the industry, such as the global decline of physical media (and rise of streaming) and how vinyl is making an unlikely resurgence. They also spoke about the variety of different careers present in the industry, including entertainment lawyers, music therapists and sync agents, and how many professional musicians have a portfolio of roles and divide their time between jobs.
Lively, energetic and certainly entertaining, the talk was a great eye-opener for pupils considering a musical pathway – with plenty of practical advice and encouragement about how to turn a dream job into reality.
