Cricket

The start of the week began in familiar fashion with rain affecting play against The Dragon. Three of the matches were abandoned mid-game, but the 12 B & C, along with the 13C’s valiantly pushed on through the rain. Unfortunately, all three teams were on the wrong end of the results, but all were competitive.

The U17’s played Bloxham 1st XI in a T20 on Wednesday. After a dominant batting display in bowler-friendly conditions (James’  75 not out) the team posted 163 from their 20 overs. Bloxham never really got going as regular wickets put a stop to any chance of a successful chase. MCS won by 42 runs.

Five matches managed to go ahead on Saturday against our near neighbours, St Edward’s. The 1st XI who were looking for their first win in recent memory were excellent in the field, bowling out the hosts for 132 in the 39th over. Abhir picked up 4 wickets, with Sam and James taking two apiece. Although wicketless, Tom was the pick of the bowlers conceding just 15 runs from his 8 overs. After a long rain delay, play did resume and despite losing an early wicket, Will and James were going along very nicely before rain stopped play for the last time. A frustrating day, but a pleasing performance nonetheless.

The 2nd XI held Teddies to 115-3 and were 42-1 in reply when they too had to abandon the match.

The U16A were in action for the first time this season. Timely wickets and some well held catches helped limit the opposition to 114 from the allotted overs. Barney looked to be in good touch, hitting consecutive sixes before holing out to a full toss. Despite Ned’s late effort the team ended up 14 runs short of the target.

The U15A’s once again went down to the last over and were again agonisingly close to sealing victory. Nico was the pick of the batsman, scoring an excellent 55. 131-5 seemed to be a decent total and the team looked on course for victory until the 18th over, where St Edward’s wrestled the advantage and sealed the win with 4 balls to spare.

It was a low scoring affair in the U14A’s match, with MCS restricting their opponents to 92 runs. Despite Fraser’s best efforts with the bat, a slightly chaotic run chase, including some questionable decision-making, left the team 3 runs short of their target.

The U12A met The Dragon for a second time in the same week, this time in the form of the County Cup. MCS batted first, posting 70-5 in their 20 overs. Despite their best efforts the target was reached in the 16th over for the loss of 3 wickets.

Next week sees the U12’s in action against John Hampden GS, the U14A face Abingdon in the first round of the County Cup and Bloxham as the opponents on Saturday.

The U15s travelled to Bradfield to play indoors on hard courts as well as on clay, claiming a one-sided victory at both A team and B team level.

The U14As and Bs played at home and were equally as dominant with 9-0 wins for both As and Bs. Students enjoyed competition against another school however and maintained high standards throughout the day.

1st and 2nd VI girls played on AstroTurf. The 1st VI competed in some exceptionally close matches, in the end losing 6-3 but to deserving opposition. The 2nd VI also lost, but for many it was a new or first time partnership and once again, students represented the school fantastically.

1st VI boys – ISL

Senior boys competed in the Independent Schools League at Radley. Against fierce opposition the boys lost 10-2 dealing well with tricky conditions. Well done to all involved.

We look forward to house tennis on Saturday 22nd May.

Rowing

This Saturday saw 8 boats racing on a 500m straight between Iffley lock and Sandford lock. There was tight racing between all crews, with a steep learning curve for the L4th as this was their first experience of racing! We were able to field two coxed quads in the L4th, one coxed quad from the U4th, one single and one dubble from the 5th form, as well as three singles and one coxless quad from the 6th Form. Well done to all involved.

Hockey

It was another thriller for the MCS 2 hockey side who drew 7-7 with a physical and competitive Banbury side. Ben and Ross were on the score sheet, but the Man of the Match this week goes to Tom, who has been in prolific goalscoring form. This week sees MCS 1 and the Mixed side in action, so good luck to them.
