The Oxfordshire Schools STEM Forum (OSSF), a platform dedicated to fostering a passion for science and technology, has become a hallmark for knowledge sharing and inspiration among young minds in the region. Our OSSF events run twice every academic term (this was our third) and unite budding scientists from Magdalen College School and across Oxfordshire. Our latest event was no exception, as Professor Jonathan Knowles OW and Professor Angela Gallop, renowned figures in their respective fields, took the stage to share their insights.

On Tuesday 19th September, our thought-provoking session entitled ‘Life Lessons from Science’ brought together pupils in Years 10-13 from MCS and eight local schools plus the African Science Academy in Tema, Ghana, with 42 girls in attendance from across Africa via Teams.

The audience was treated to an engaging discussion on the common principles that underpin successful scientific exploration. Professors Knowles and Gallop emphasised the importance of curiosity, perseverance and collaboration in scientific endeavours. They shared personal anecdotes from their respective fields of Medicine and Forensic Science that showcased how these principles had been instrumental in their own careers.

"The talk gave some inspiring advice that stuck with me."

Pupils in attendance were captivated by the engaging conversation and left with a newfound appreciation for the world of science. Jay, a Fifth Form MCS pupil, said of the event: “Aside from introducing everyone to forensic science, the talk gave some inspiring advice that stuck with me; to find an innovation in developing science, one must always break some rules or you will be the same as everyone else. If the field does not yield fruitful progress, there must be something wrong with the orthodox it is based on. The chemistry between the two speakers made the talk a lot more enjoyable, and the frequent jokes made the talk even more intriguing.“

Our next OSSF event promises to be equally enlightening and is due to focus on inspiring young people to expand their scientific horizons in the Earth Sciences.
