We are delighted to announce that Magdalen College School has retained its award from The National Archives for Archive Service Accreditation and has retained its status as an Accredited Archive Service, the only school archive in the UK to hold this distinction.

The Accreditation Panel, which assessed our archive in July 2023, “recognised the archive service as a pioneering example of a school archive and congratulated it on its strong positive progress in service delivery and development.” Accredited Archive Service status is granted for a period of up to six years from the date of the initial award.

The panel also noted the “comprehensive programme of engagement” within the school, using archives for a range of opportunities across the academic year, including:

  • a handling session and a time capsule for Year 5 pupils on ‘How do we know what happened?’, around the Queen’s death and coronation of King Charles III with The Bridge programme;
  • studying our Big School architectural plans when examining Brutalism in Year 10 art;
  • using our two editions of John Foxe’s Acts & Monuments to examine the Reformation in Year 8 history;
  • and facilitating a handling session as an introduction to using original sources for Year 12 prospective historians.”

Outside of the classroom, there is an Archive Club that meets weekly during Tuesday lunchtimes, giving pupils the opportunity to help preserve the collection and catalogue new material. The club has also recently been on trips to Brasenose College and Magdalen College to see their historic archives.
