A respected economics professor at the London School of Economics (LSE), Professor Janet Hunter, has praised a new economics journal launched by MCS Sixth Form pupils.
She described The Marginalist as: “An impressive and well-researched set of contributions, ranging widely over time and place, and demonstrating a good understanding of economic issues and theories.”

Led by Callum (Lower Sixth), the publication features a wide range of original articles written by pupils, offering thoughtful analysis, fresh perspectives, and a clear passion for engaging with complex economic ideas surrounding the UK economy and global affairs.
Setting out his ambition for The Marginalist in his introduction, Callum writes: “In these pages, we explore the friction between tradition and progress. We analyse the fiscal challenges facing the United Kingdom under Labour, apply Stiglitz’s theories to modern inequality, and so much more.”
Pupils’ work sits alongside contributions from experienced voices, including two members of staff who wrote about the economics of Empire and the furore surrounding media leaks of the Budget, as well as an article by Professor Hunter herself.
Also amongst the contributors is Neil Record, OW 1971 and Founder of Record Currency Management, one of the largest independent currency and asset management firms globally.
“Magdalen College School’s new economics journal The Marginalist is a shining example of a publication founded on pupil enthusiasm, exploring a variety of complex and challenging economic problems. Impressive.”
Neil Record, OW
Daniel Masters, Economics Teacher, said: “Congratulations to Callum and the team for such an incisive review. Their writing more than holds its own alongside those of professional economists and business leaders, reflecting both a depth of understanding and a willingness to tackle real world issues. We look forward to the next edition!”
