House Drama was a real highlight of the first half of the term. The pupil directors worked frantically and with admirable vision to create six excellent pieces of theatre. Comedy dominated, as ever, but the range was sufficiently varied to make for a highly entertaining afternoon. We moved from Callender’s pacey One Man, Two Guvnors, featuring Sam in the challenging lead role, to Wilkinson’s lively Fawlty Stables, which imagined Basil and Sybil as the biblical innkeepers of nativity fame. Chavasse took us to the darker side with an excerpt from American Pyscho, a bold choice that showed inventive use of multiple actors to portray the warring elements in the central character’s head. Walker took a well-deserved third place with a new piece of writing, Art Heist, which premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe this summer, while Maltby ended second with an old (but freshly rendered) Monty Python chestnut. It was Leicester who triumphed, though, with Will and Aisling directing a fast and very funny sketch called Sardines, set in a wardrobe…

I was hugely impressed with the overall standard and the professionalism and inventiveness of the directors, especially given their extremely limited budget and time
