Congratulations to Ed (Upper Sixth) and his friend Rory for completing a challenging 350km cycle ride to raise funds for two charities.

During lockdown, the friends took up road cycling to keep fit. At the start of July they decided to turn this into a challenge to cycle from Pangbourne (Rory is at school at Pangbourne College) to Padstow over 3 days. This would be a ride of over 350km, climbing a total of 3,785 metres (over three times the height of Ben Nevis!).

Ed and Rory set themselves the goal of raising £5000 for two charities close to their hearts. Firstly The HUGE Partnership, (Helping UGanda Educate) which supports the Nabugabo Community Learning Centre in South West Uganda, a primary school set up to provide free education and support to vulnerable and disadvantaged children, who would otherwise not be able to attend school.

Their second chosen charity is The Royal National Lifeboat Institution. In addition to their 24/7 search and rescue lifeboat service, they operate a seasonal lifeguard service. Lockdown dramatically halted fundraising events and the RNLI have had a particularly busy summer with many people holidaying in the UK and visiting beaches.

Ed and Rory said, “We have spent many holidays near Padstow, our destination, and it therefore seems very fitting for us to choose the RNLI as our second charity”.

Not only have Ed and Rory smashed their 350km target but they have smashed their fundraising target too, which currently stands at £5444.50. You can still donate to their Money Giving page here.

Well done Ed and Rory, we hope you are both enjoying a well-deserved rest now!
