On 27 September, 8 pupils ranging from Lower Fourth to Upper Sixth visited the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) careers fair based at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.

A review by Dan, Fifth Form:

“Despite the weather worsening throughout the day, we managed to see most of the options before the worst set in. There was a plethora of stands from varying STEM aspects. These included a stand run by the Army Air Corps which had an Apache attack helicopter and a smaller Gazelle helicopter which we were able to sit in.

In addition to these, a section of the infantry had a stand with examples of some of the kit that they use in the field which included some weapons systems, bullet-proof vests, and army helmets.

Despite it being held at Sandhurst, there were not exclusively military stands with over 60 civilian organisations showing off various STEM career options, for example, there was a stand run by the Formula 1 racing team Williams who hosted a small racing tournament on an advanced F1 racing simulator on which you had to complete 2 laps in the fastest time possible.

One of the most popular was a stand run by BT due to the fact that they were showing off innovative uses of Virtual Reality which included a simulation of a surgery to train the next generation of doctors and ways to use VR to help with digital art so you can actually walk around in your creation.

After we had looked around the stands, we also attended a workshop listening to 5 people who had made various successes in STEM careers and how they had got to the positions they were in today, ranging from an army explosives technician to the leader of a motor-racing company.

All in all, the whole day was engaging and gave some valuable insight into what it would be like being employed in a career related to STEM.”
