As dawn broke over Oxford this morning, Friday 1 May, crowds of people gathered to listen to Magdalen College Choir herald the arrival of spring from the top of the Great Tower – a much-loved tradition dating back to the 16th century.
Thousands packed the streets and lined the banks of the river below to hear their stunning performance of Hymnus Eucharisticus, marking the start of Oxford’s May Day revelries.
Among those taking part were the 16 young choristers of Magdalen College School – for some, their first experience of May Morning and of singing to such crowds.

"Today was my first May Day! I was so excited, every time I waved, everyone waved back - it was so cool!"

In addition to May Morning, the choir maintains a distinguished programme of recordings, broadcasts, performances and international tours, including recently to the United States. From 2027, this tradition will continue with the admission of girls to the choir and the creation of two further places for MCS choristers.
