To mark the arrival of the Chinese New Year tomorrow, our Lower Fourth pupils participated in a calligraphy workshop last week with Mrs Sun. The session provided a hands-on introduction to the traditional process of Chinese script.
The pupils used the Mao bi, which is the traditional Chinese calligraphy brush, and a specific quick drying ink formulated for both painting and script. To ensure they mastered the fluid movements required, the pupils followed a structured progression of materials set out by Mrs Sun. They began their practice on recycled paper to build confidence in brush control, before moving on to Xuan paper (also known as rice paper) to experience the authentic absorption of the ink. For their final pieces, the pupils used vibrant red Xuan paper featuring a golden dragon print specifically designed for the festive season.
The focal point of the workshop was the character ‘Fu’ (福), which translates to fortune or good luck. Pupils were able to capture the balance of this character in a short space of time, refining their technique whilst appreciating the beauty of the script. Mrs Sun explained that these characters are often displayed upside down on doors during the New Year, to invite good luck to enter the home and remain there for the duration of the year.
Thanks to Mrs Sun for organising such a fun and festive activity for the pupils. The celebration continues next week with a dumpling making session on Monday, which will be the final event in our series of festive activities.
Happy Chinese New Year to all!
