MCS hosted the 6th Blackwell’s and Historical Association A Level History Conference on Thursday 16th November, joined remotely by over 250 pupils from 10 participating schools. A strong programme of distinguished speakers spoke at the event, focusing on the different characteristics of the Third Reich. MCS Head of History, Dr Max Habsburg organised the conference and was delighted to see so many enthusiastic delegates from MCS partner schools.

First to speak was Dr Lisa Pine, Associate Fellow of the Institute of Historical Research at the University of London, who began the conference on the topic of ‘Society and Social Policies from 1933 to 1939’. Her talk focused on the creation of the Nazi Volkgemeinschaft (or ‘national community’) in 1933 and the party’s policy towards certain demographic groups, including workers, women and the family and youth.

Next, Dr Paul Moore, a lecturer on Modern European History at the University of Leicester offered an insightful lecture on ‘Repression and Control from 1933 to 1939’, looking at areas including public spaces, social control, the police state and concentration camps. To close proceedings, Professor Richard Overy, Honorary Research Professor at the University of Exeter taught pupils about ‘The Third Reich at War’. His lecture addressed Hitler’s view of war and examined him as a war leader, before looking at German society at war more generally and the genocide that was occurring.
