For our first newsletter of the new school year, we would like to welcome OWs from the class of 2020 and new Friends of MCS to our newsletter readership. We are so sorry not to see you in person this year but are delighted to have you here!
As pre-season sports commence, it is fair to say that MCS is buzzing to welcome all its students back on site, after six months of absence for many. School is making every effort to ensure that the site is as safe as possible for students and staff, with a plethora of measures including one way systems, altered timetables, and new handwashing stations.
While school will be opening to pupils and staff, we regret that we are unable to hold the following Michaelmas term OW events due to ongoing limitations of the pandemic:
2020 YOW Sport and Curry (scheduled for Saturday 12th September)
2020 VOW Lunch
In the meantime, we are exploring some alternative virtual events and will note these in due course.
MCS continues to commit to sustainability and diversity
We are exploring ways to consult OWs on our sustainability and diversity, and how to offer you an opportunity to feedback through online channels.
Exam Results 2020
Since we last wrote to you, U6 and Fifth Formers have had rather a whirlwind experience with exam results.
MCS can report that for GCSEs, over 60% were classified as 9 (A*) grades, over 86% of grades at 9-8 (A*), and over 96% at 9-7 (A*-A) grades. 54 boys achieved straight 9 and 8 (A*) grades and 21 boys achieved straight 9 (A*) grades.
Congratulations to our U6 and Fifth Formers on such a strong set of results, and for their admirable resilience and adaptability in coping with the many and often unpredictable changes since March.
Thanks to the generosity of our community, over £67,000 has been raised for hardship and bursary funds at MCS since the start of the Conveniamus campaign on Commem.
The first £50,000 has been matched by an OW in honour of inspirational former MCS teacher Nigel Bates, and a second OW has recently come forward to match the next £25,000 in gifts.
Raising hardship and bursary funds will allow us to support not only those who are profoundly affected by the pandemic, but also ensure that MCS is able to recruit a strong cohort of pupils drawn from all parts of society.

Join the OW LinkedIn group
The challenges brought on by the pandemic have had – and will continue to have for some time – implications for those looking to enter higher education or the working world. Many pupils may be taking an unexpected gap year, or leaving university to enter a job market which appears to have shrunk in recent months. As a result, the desire for learning and work opportunities is high and there is no shortage of talented individuals seeking employment or experience.
We’d like to help OWs looking for opportunities and those who may have some to offer connect via our LinkedIn group. If you’re not already a member, please do request to join and accompany the nearly 1,000 Old Waynfletes who are part of our community there. In addition to joining the OW group, you can also include MCS as part of your education profile in order to allow other OWs to more easily find you.

Pandemic Papers
Thank you to all who have already contributed entries to the Pandemic Papers. The MCS Archive’s collecting initiative recording the impact of the coronavirus is developing into a rich and diverse resource for the future. With over 30 entries fully catalogued, the collection has the potential to be nationally important in years to come.
Recent highlights include a current parent’s photographic record of shop signs and the heartening responses from children thanking the NHS. Junior School teacher Mrs Caroline Winstone assembled a time capsule of pupils’ responses to the pandemic during the lockdown, with an item from each child.
From the work of our youngest pupils to the poetry and prose of Veteran Old Waynfletes, the archive is becoming a collection of voices and experiences which span the generations as well as the globe. As preparations take shape for the new school year beginning under the veil of Covid-19, we are also recording the school administration’s logistical decisions.
