The chance to learn an instrument is an important part of the educational experience of every boy and girl. Many pupils arrive at MCS already learning an instrument; others find the change to a new school a good opportunity to take up an instrument for the first time, or indeed take up a second instrument. Most pupils at Magdalen College School learn a musical instrument and they enjoy making music with their friends across year groups. Over 450 instrumental lessons are taught in school each week and many pupils learn externally.
The Music Department has an expert team of 37 visiting staff to meet a large demand for instrumental tuition in all of the major keyboard and orchestral instruments. We additionally offer lessons in guitar (and bass guitar), saxophone, drum kit, percussion, harp and singing.
