OWs John Leighfield (1957), Dylan Harvey (1989) and Tom Gould (2017) joined Alan Cooper and boys from the Lower Fourth for an oral history event on 2 October 2018.
Students were given an opportunity to quiz former MCS pupils about their time at the school, as part of a project to create to create a newspaper for Field Day, with pupils then writing up their interviews with the OWs in the form of news pieces.
Students spent the day gathering stories and breaking news for publication later that afternoon. The morning had started with a talk on journalism from parent Oliver Holt, Chief Sports Writer for the Mail on Sunday, and the boys were able to quickly put his advice to good use in their interviews with OWs.
Conversations were wide-ranging and included lively discussions of current events and experiences at MCS, past and present. Of particular interest were school lunches throughout the decades,and the lower fourth students were entertained by tales of the old Muni.
Held in the school’s archives, students were introduced to the work of another OW, William Camden, when John Leighfield described to the boys how his experiences with scouting at MCS sparked a lifelong interest in antiquarian maps.
