This year’s OW weekend was a resounding success.

The 2018 event began early on Saturday with the annual OW run at Cutteslowe and Sunnymead Park.

Despite a nagging, but thankfully only intermittent rain, an enthusiastic group of OWs, parents, staff and pupils turned up in the early hours of Saturday 24 March. This year, we saw the first-ever Parents Team turn out, special thanks to the organisation of parent Astrid Gibbon. In all, 32 people participated in the fourth annual MCS vs OW Run.

In all, 32 runners took to the track, with the School team achieving a comfortable victory in the overall results. The OWs finished respectably in second place, while the staff team managed to pip the parents to third position. In the individual standings, Joe Bowness (OW 2013) won with Oliver Marjot (staff) finishing in second and Hal Burtenshaw (5th form) in third.

On Saturday evening, athletic pursuit gave way to vibrant conversation and feasting, as the School welcomed guests to the OW Dinner, held at Lady Margaret Hall. Attendees, of whom many were a reunion party of 1980s leavers, were first treated to a talk by Will Wyatt (OW 1961) entitled, ‘It’s not just a fun factory: Looking at the BBC in my rear-view mirror’, before being ushered to a drinks reception, held in LMH’s Talbot Hall, which preceded dinner in the Deneke Dining Hall. A splendid time was had by all, and the School particularly looks forward to hosting next year’s event on 30 March in the MCS Dining Hall – we hope you save the date in your diaries, and please contact the Waynflete Office if you need any assistance with booking year group reunions.

The following day, the dinner suit was swapped for sports kit, as OWs and current pupils went head-to-head in a variety of sports matches.

Two football fixtures were played on Christ Church field, such was the number of keen OW sign-ups. MCS’s 1st XI beat their OW counterparts with an unequivocal score-line of 7-2, while the 2nd team played out an altogether more cagey affair that ended 1-1.

MCS were equally formidable in the women’s netball, winning 18-11 against the OWs.

The OW players did, however, achieve some recompense on the astro turf, defeating the MCS men’s hockey team 5-3.

We would like to thank everyone who took part in the weekend’s events for making it such a memorable two days, all of which encapsulated the School’s propensity for both friendly competition and fun.
