The school was informed by his brother John (OW 1960) that sadly Robert passed away on 24 May 2015. John provided the following obituary:

ROBERT FREDERICK HOWARD MITCHELMORE

1945 – 2015

Robert Mitchelmore passed away on May 24, 2015 in the Churchill Hospital, Oxford at the age of 69.

Robert followed his older brother John into the boarding house Chavasse and Leicester. Robert involved himself in various school activities, in particular sport where he represented the school in Rugby, Hockey and Cricket at various levels. Rugby was always his first love playing in the 1st XV.

 

After school Robert joined Barclays Bank in Banbury, but after a time felt that he would like to work abroad and joined the Chartered Bank in London with a view to an overseas posting. However it happened he met his wife Pauline there and as first postings were on a bachelor basis he resigned from the Chartered Bank and returned to Barclays. Over the years he worked in Chipping Norton, Oxford and Thame before retiring early on health grounds.

All this time he continued his interest in sport, playing rugby at Banbury which he captained, and also played hockey, cricket and golf. During his years of retirement he overcame various health problems to be very involved in various capacities with Banbury Rugby Club, including its Presidency, and was Chairman of Oxfordshire Rugby Vice Presidents. He also served Banbury Cricket Club where likewise he was its President.

Throughout his periods of illness he always remained cheerful even when he was told that his cancer could not be treated. Robert left his wife Pauline, son James and grandchildren Benjamin and Sophie.
