Along with the rest of the world, MCS has been watching the difficult scenes unfolding in Ukraine and stands by those caught up in the conflict. As ever, the community has responded in strong, constructive and thoughtful ways.
As pupils and staff gathered together in Chapel after the half term break, the unfolding crisis was naturally the focus of the Master’s Chapel address.
“For a host of different and possibly competing reasons, this is a difficult time to be Ukrainian, to be Russian, and indeed to be European… This war is affecting many people in our community personally, again, for a host of reasons. So please be aware of and if necessary sensitive to that fact. And as ever, we are here if you would like to talk about any of this”
– The Master addressing Chapel on 28 February
Saturday’s MUN Conference (Model United Nations) provided an equally fitting opportunity to reflect on the conflict with over 300 young people from both MCS and many of our partner schools in Oxfordshire. In response to the crisis, the MCS Charity Committee advocated for the conflict in Ukraine to be included as one of the conference’s topics, and proceedings were used as a vehicle to raise awareness of the crisis among pupils, and circulate petitions in support of an end to the violence.
Upper Sixth pupil Sammy, MUN’s General Secretary, delivered a thought-provoking address to pupils at the start of the conference, with the unfolding crisis as its heart. You can read the full transcript here.
“I’m sure it has not escaped your notice that we convene here today during a period of international and European crisis, unparalleled since the end of the Second World War”
– Sammy, Upper Sixth, addressing fellow pupils as MUN General Secretary
The school has swiftly investigated a variety of options for collection of items to donate to the Ukraine. We are very conscious that a number of donation centres have ceased acceptance of physical donations, and of the very likelihood that a school collection of items could result in no mechanism to get them to where they are needed. We are therefore taking the advice of major aid and charitable organisations in guiding the community to make monetary donations via the DEC (Disasters Emergency Committee).
We are also offering our support to this year’s chosen school charity, Asylum Welcome, who are doing incredible work during this difficult time to support those displaced by the violence.
"Asylum Welcome stands in solidarity with all Ukrainians and reaffirms its commitment to support all displaced peoples arriving in the UK by lobbying for a fairer, more dignified route to refugeehood and asylum"

You can read their statement on the Russia-Ukraine conflict here, which includes links to several petitions and ways to help. As MCS’s charitable partner for the remainder of the academic year, we will continue to support the charity in their valuable work as this situation unfolds.
