We were honoured to welcome Joan Dawson Bakewell DBE, Baroness Bakewell – journalist, presenter, peer and President of Birkbeck University – to the Oxford Festival of the Arts, for an inspiring conversation with MCS Master Helen Pike.

Baroness Bakewell was awarded a Life Peerage in 2011 and in 2017 was named Humanist of the Year in recognition of her exploration of the human condition through the arts, while co-chair of the All Party Parliamentary Humanist Group. She is widely acclaimed for her exceptional arts coverage, and is a recipient of the BAFTA Fellowship.

During the lively and wide-ranging discussion, Baroness Bakewell entertained the Festival Hall audience with stories about her career and her significant role in introducing arts coverage to the BBC; her ongoing commitment to public life and work in the House of Lords; the value she places on friends and family – and keeping busy; and her enormous respect for education.

As one of the final events of the 2025 festival season, the conversation event – which has previously attracted guests such as Theresa May, Baroness May of Maidenhead, and the Rt Hon Alan Johnson – was a fitting conclusion to a fabulous celebration of the arts in Oxford. We are already looking forward to OFA 2026!
