The Junior School and guests from seven other schools enjoyed a virtual author visit from the award-winning children’s author Ross MacKenzie on Monday morning. Ross shared his reading experiences as a child and admitted to having been a reluctant reader until about the age of nine. All changed when he listened to his teacher read Roald Dahl’s The Witches to the class, which he credits as changing his life and led him to become a best-selling children’s author. He also revealed that he had just been awarded The Scottish Teenage Book Prize 2021 for his novel Evernight. A truly aspirational talk for every pupil on the call; this multi-award-winning author’s ambition was kindled from just one story!

The event also launched a creative writing competition which is being run by The Oxford Festival of the Arts. We asked Ross to suggest a title that aspiring young writers could use to craft a short story and ‘The Door in the Cellar’ was chosen. Winners of this competition will be awarded signed copies of Ross MacKenzie’s books. Full details can be found here.

This visit was arranged in association with Andersen Press and The Reading Agency, and we are grateful for support from Blackwell’s in providing all attending pupils with the opportunity to purchase signed copies of Ross’ books.
