It was a pleasure to welcome back former pupil Lucy Greenwood (OW 2018) this week and hear about her work in the rapidly evolving field of health data science.
Currently reading for a DPhil in Health Data Science at the Nuffield Department of Medicine, Lucy is building on an impressive academic journey which has included an MSc in Modelling for Global Health and an MMath in Mathematics. Alongside her studies, she has also spent time working in Singapore, taking the opportunity to travel and explore the region.
Speaking to MCS and partner school pupils in Years 10–13, Lucy offered a fascinating insight into the real-world impact of mathematics. She explained how, behind every disease outbreak, there are models working to predict what happens next; behind hospital decisions, probabilities helping doctors assess risk; and behind new drugs, statistical tests determining whether they are truly effective. Her message was clear: the more maths you learn, the more powerful and far reaching its applications become.
It was inspiring for pupils to see how a passion for maths can lead to meaningful work at the forefront of global health, and to gain a glimpse into the many pathways available beyond school.
Thank you, Lucy, and we look forward to staying in touch!
