The Michaelmas Term is always jam-packed with productions and first out the wings this year was Sophocles’ classic Oedipus Rex. With just five weeks to cast, rehearse, design, tech and mount an hour-long Greek tragedy, the Drama Department pulled out all the stops – and definitely pulled it off.

With the support of the Classics Department, the team drew on multiple translations and adaptations, weaving them together to create a uniquely MCS version of the famous play.

A cast of 27, supported by a pupil tech team of 11 – which led on all aspects of lighting, sound, set and costume design – brought to life Oedipus’ complex and flawed character, and a plot riven with ego, murder and incest.

Audiences joining Saturday’s performance also had the opportunity to hear more about Oedipus Rex, and its place within Greek tragedy, from Sarah Marshall – DPhil in Classical Languages and Literature at the University of Oxford and Classics Waynflete Academic at MCS.

From Greek chorus to cabaret, next on stage at MCS is the annual Sixth Form Musical – this year Singing in the Rain – and we can’t wait!
