Upper Sixth hear thought-provoking talk from Oxfordshire Community Foundation

Earlier today, Upper Sixth pupils enjoyed an informative and thought-provoking talk from Zoe Sprigings, CEO of Oxfordshire Community Foundation, exploring some of the economic and social challenges facing communities across Oxfordshire.

In her presentation, ‘Oxfordshire Uncovered: why effective philanthropy is needed to build thriving communities in our county’, Zoe offered an eye-opening insight into the inequalities that exist within a place perhaps better known for its education, science and beauty. She explained that, alongside its significant economic wealth, Oxfordshire is home to some of the most disadvantaged postcodes in the country.

Zoe also spoke about the work of Oxfordshire Community Foundation, and of many other small charities in the county, to address inequalities in areas including isolation, parenting and early years, employment, and health and exercise. Discussing the role of philanthropy in tackling these needs, she encouraged pupils to consider their own perspectives on altruism.

The talk was particularly relevant for our Upper Sixth pupils, all of whom had taken part in MCS’ community service programme during their Lower Sixth year. It gave them an opportunity to reflect on their experiences and consider how they might continue to contribute to the city and county where they live and learn.
