3 January 1939 – 29 December 2025
The Waynflete Office has been informed by his sister Diana, of the passing of Michael North at the age of 86. We are grateful to Diana for sharing these words about Michael’s life:
Michael was known at school as Michael ‘Tommy’ North because when he arrived, he reminded other boys of Tom Thumb.
Michael was awarded a choristership into Magdalen College Choir in Oxford and lived in the boarding house of Magdalen College School in April 1948. He became Head Chorister in 1952 and enjoyed regularly singing on top of Magdalen Tower to start off the Oxford Mayday activities and singing solos in the choir. Michael was invited to sing the short boy soprano solo by Bradford Old Choral Society in ‘Elijah’ by Felix Mendelssohn. After his voice broke, he continued his education at MCS until he left in the summer of 1957.
Michael was not academically gifted, apart from in Art and Chemistry, although when he left the school, he had managed to gain seven O Levels. However, he was a gifted sportsman and played hockey, cricket and rugby for the school.
