The Boat Club were delighted to welcome Olympic gold-medal winning rower Paul Bennett to MCS.

Paul shadowed several crews on the water; sharing his experiences and commenting on how they were working together to move the boat. After school he lead an inspiring and honest Q&A session in the library, covering everything from how he started out rowing at University to what it was like winning an Olympic Games. Paul spoke in depth about the challenges of competing and training at the top end of your sport while trying to fit in studying and lectures at University, likening it to juggling your workload at school; and the ease of having this removed as a full-time funded athlete once he made it onto the GB squad.

He gave a candid description of the insecurities and setbacks he experienced throughout his rowing career; to the point of nearly quitting but not being able to let his teammates down. It was a fascinating insight into his experiences of rowing at the highest level and the hype of the Olympic Games. He had everyone laughing as he called his thoughts during the Men’s VIII final at Rio; swinging from daring to believe they might be able to win to a gripping fear that he was going to hit the wall and have nothing left to push with.

He very kindly brought in his weighty gold medal and passed it around for everyone to see. At present Paul has left the GB squad and is enjoying starting a career in London with no plans to get back in training for Tokyo.
