Pupils and staff enjoyed an inspiring visit from Old Waynflete Dr Derreck Van Gelderen (OW 2007), now Head of AI Strategy and AI Energy Lead at PA Consulting. Returning to MCS, Derreck shared his fascinating journey from university to a dynamic career that’s spanned engineering and consulting – and an appearance on reality tv show ‘Astronauts – Do You Have What it Takes?’! Derreck is also the co-author of ‘A Leader’s Guide to Generative AI,’ which was published recently.
Derreck spoke passionately about the power of artificial intelligence to solve complex global challenges, from creating COVID vaccine booking systems to advancing sustainable aviation. He emphasised how crucial today’s generation is to shaping the future of AI, and highlighted the vast career opportunities emerging in this rapidly growing field.
It was a fantastic opportunity to hear first-hand how AI is transforming the workplace – and how one former pupil has carved out a path within this fast-moving sector. Above all, Derreck’s talk emphasised the importance of viewing AI as not just a tool, but a partner to work with.
