Roy Jackson (OW 1961)

The Waynflete Office has been informed of the death of Roy Jackson. We send our deepest condolences to Roy’s family and friends, and are grateful to his son Julian for providing these words about his life:

Our father was born in Glasgow in 1943, moving to Oxford as a young boy when his own father got a senior teaching role in Headington.

He attended MCS through the 50s, where he was an active member of both the Natural History and Printing Societies. He spoke very fondly of his time at MCS.

His love of the natural world, whilst nurtured and encouraged at MCS, continued throughout his life and defined the path he took. He was a passionate birdwatcher, joining the Oxford Ornithological Society at a young age along with the RSPB and other wildlife societies. He travelled widely pursuing his love of nature.

On leaving MCS he attended Worcester Teacher Training College where he specialised in Science with a bias towards Biology.

His first teaching role was at Battle School in Reading, moving a few years later to Burford School in West Oxfordshire. He remained at Burford till his retirement from teaching. Acknowledged as a ‘bit of a maverick’ it is fair to say our father influenced and affected thousands of children sharing his love of science and nature with them. The messages from generations of children on hearing of his passing were very humbling.
