The Waynflete Office has been informed of the death of Dr John Richard Roweth Spurell. Here we include his obituary from the Royal College of Physicians website:

John Richard Rowarth Spurrell BM BCh Oxon (1959) MRCP (1963) FRCP (1979) was a consultant physician at the Brighton and Lewes Hospital. Born in Epsom, Surrey, he was the son of Walter Roworth Spurrell FRCS, who was professor of physiology at Guy’s for twenty-nine years. He attended Magdalen College School in Oxford and studied medicine at Magdalen College and Guy’s Hospital qualifying BM BCh in 1959.

After house jobs at Guy’s he was appointed a consultant physician at the Brighton and Lewes and Mid-Sussex Hospital groups where he stayed for the rest of his career.

His favourite relaxation was playing the piano.

In 1969 he married Christine Marguerita née Deem, the daughter of Maurice Deem, who was an engineer. They had a son, Philip, and daughter, Isobel. When he died on 22 September 2013, after a long illness, he was survived by Christine, their children and grandchildren Oliver, Thomas and Alice.
