From Mr Blackburn:

On Friday 11 June, the Upper Sixth Theologians, fresh from triumphantly finishing their A level exams, embarked on a day trip to Coventry. A city not known for its elegance or its cultural capital, Coventry is in fact 2021’s Capital of Culture and home to one of the UK’s most historically and theologically interesting sites: its cathedral complex.

The ruins of the original cathedral, bombed during the blitz of 1940, proved a moving and atmospheric place to spend a sunny morning, reflecting on the concepts of peace and reconciliation promoted and represented by the landmark. We learned of Provost Richard Howard, the heroic priest who tried in vain to save his church and later become known for the words ‘father forgive’, which he inscribed in the ruins. Prov. Howard soon became a cult figure among the pupils, as did Ian, our genial and knowledgable guide.

We then moved inside the new and striking modernist Cathedral, a blend of concrete, tapestry and stained glass and a building of real idiosyncratic beauty. Following this, the pupils convened on the lawn outside for a spot of lunch and light discussion about what they had learned. Thanks were given to Ian, and also to each other for a successful and enjoyable final year of Theology.

The Theology department has been lucky to teach such a good-natured and talented bunch, and we wish them all the very best as the year draws to a close.
