A new look 1st XI (excluding the L6th) were on the wrong side of the result at Stowe on Wednesday. However, four 5th formers made their debut for the school, with Alex and Adam contributing very well with the bat and ball respectively. Louis scored a 50 for the 2nd XI v a strong Aylesbury Grammar School side in what ended up a very competitive game.

It was 2 wins and 2 losses for the U14s and U15s on Thursday, again against Stowe. The U15A’s and U14B’s were the winning sides on the day.

Saturday saw us play Solihull, as the 1st XI played their first game on School Field in glorious sunshine and, despite some threatening bowling, posted a total of 310 from their 50 overs. James scored 129, his first century for the 1st XI and Captain Anton batted brilliantly for his 69. Wickets were hard to come by on a pitch that flattened out, but MCS worked hard to restrict the opposition to 225-7 – resulting in an 85 run victory.

There was also a century in the U15As where Kalan (127) and Tom (47) were largely responsible for the team posting 271-3 from their 30 overs. Alfie did the damage with the ball, taking 4 wickets in his opening spell and the team won by 240 runs.

The U14A produced arguably the best result of the weekend, chasing down 132 in great team performance. After Rayaan and Rob, who were part of a sizeable partnership, fell in quick succession, it seemed as if momentum had been lost but Michael struck some lusty blows to see the team home.

The 13As came up against a strong Solihull side and after a below par performance in the field were set the challenge of chasing 217. They found themselves under real pressure with the bat, eventually being bowled out for 92. A learning experience for this talented group of players.

The U13Bs won by 52 runs after a strong display with bat and ball. In the U12s The A team won by 42 runs in a game that saw 9 players bowl at least 2 overs and everyone bat. The 12Bs scored 73, but fell short in their chase of 169.

Next week sees the 1st XI play Eton on Thursday afternoon, before a full block for all age groups against Merchant Taylor’s next Saturday.

OXIST

There was fantastic competition on Milham Ford and Christ Church as the Senior OXIST tournament came to MCS. A convincing win v Abingdon in the first match, saw MCS win 66-30. This was followed with a draw v Radley, 48-48 after some superb doubles, and a close 50-46 win over St Edward’s. The overall points tally saw Radley pip MCS into 2nd, which is a highly commendable result.

The U15s lost 9-3 to Radley and 11-1 to Abingdon. Despite this result, they were the only team to take a set off Abingdon on the day. Players were fantastic through the day and are demonstrating significant progress in their match play and tactical understanding.

The U14s beat Radley 57-39, but lost 51-45 to Abingdon to finish second overall.

U12s and U13s played Abingdon on School Field and proved too strong on the day. Comfortable wins in both teams demonstrated the strength in depth of the U13s and the potential of the 2nd Form squad.

Athletics

Well done to the Inter Boys’ athletics team, who finished 5th at the Radley Multi-event competition. Athletes had to complete a sprint, a long distance run, a throw and a jump each. The event culminated in a team 4x200m relay which was completed in an impressive time of 1 min 58 seconds. Individually Nolu ran a strong 100m finishing in 12.1 seconds, Toby wasn’t too far behind in 12.6 seconds. Robert came third in the 400m in a time of 67 seconds and Niall ran well in the 800m finishing just under 3 minutes.

Rowing and Sailing

Pupils competed in the National Schools Regatta at Dorney Lake and in the Feva Nationals at Hayling Island over half-term. Both events served as fantastic experience for all concerned and detailed reports from Mr Atkin and Mr Pearson can be found on the sports website.

The 1st VI sailors were also in action in the Thames Valley School Championship this weekend. Fierce sun, capricious, wafty breeze and a roster of strong teams produced challenging racing for an inexperienced but capable First VI.  In the round-robin stage Magdalen won 6 of 8 races, including wins over Papercourt Youth, Ryde A and B and Winchester. The team then squeaked through a close 1-1 semi-final with Sevenoaks, winning on count-back. Hosts RGS Firsts proved too good in the final, leaving Magdalen a creditable 2nd overall.

Hockey

Good luck to the summer league teams in action this week. Well done to all those who played over half-term and last week in tough games v Oxford and Oxford Hawks.

Notable Performance

Congratulations to Harry who played for England U16s football side over half-term v Northern Ireland. This is a fantastic achievement and great reward for Harry’s hard work throughout the season with West Bromwich Albion.
