As a tight-knit school body, the importance of community is well understood by MCS pupils, whose support for the wider community ranges from fundraising to volunteering. We are very proud of the initiative taken by individual pupils to organise their own fundraising and volunteering, with some going to extraordinary lengths to contribute their time and energy to causes close to their hearts.

In addition to voluntary work undertaken by students, raising awareness as well as funds plays an increasingly central role in the life of the school. After voting for one local and one international charity to support this term, WaterAid and Oxford Homeless Pathways, students have been tasked with coming up with innovative ways to fundraise within Houserooms over the length of the term, to boost the funds raised by the weekly charity collection. From sponsored silences, to marathon football matches, the students are throwing their energy into organising fundraising events. The Sixth Form Charity Committee lead the school’s charity involvement, and this year are putting on a charity talent show, ‘MCS’s Got Talent’, which is giving them invaluable experience in leadership and enterprise.

Talks by external speakers and film screenings form a vital part of developing students’ awareness; for example, one speaker this term has tackled the issue of homelessness, particularly in Oxford. In Chapel, we have also been listening to stories from those people our charities have been helping and how donated money is used, as well as listening to students talking about what has motivated them to undertake their own volunteering and fundraising work outside of school.

There are also a number of opportunities organised by the MCS Sports Department to participate in sponsored events. This year, there will be teams of students and staff competing in the Oxford Town and Gown in May, as well as the Nuffield Health Triathlon at Dorney Lake.

It isn’t just the students who get involved, though. From charity boxing matches to 80-mile sponsored cycle rides, our staff are just as enthusiastic to raise awareness and money for charity.
