The Magdalen College School archive has been awarded Archive Service Accreditation. This makes MCS the fourth archive service in Oxfordshire to achieve this, before any of the colleges or historic houses, and the first school archive in the UK.

Accredited Archive Services ensure the long-term collection, preservation and accessibility of our archive heritage. Accreditation is the UK quality standard which recognises good performance in all areas of archive service delivery. Achieving accredited status demonstrates that the MCS archive has met clearly defined national standards relating to management and resourcing; the care of its unique collections and what the service offers to its entire range of users.

Lindsay McCormack, Archivist, said of the news:

“Achieving Archive Service Accreditation is a huge achievement for MCS, and we are very proud to be the first school archive in the United Kingdom to be recognised with this accolade. I am delighted to be part of the flourishing service at the heart of the school, which takes advantage of our long history to underpin MCS’s modern aims. Accreditation is a wonderful validation of the efforts of many colleagues in school alongside the connections with OWs, parents and the wider local and archival community.”

Given this status of national significance, the first accessions to the Archive will be items related to the current pandemic, starting with the Master’s address to pupils on the day the school closed. All pupils, staff and Old Waynfletes are invited to contribute to this new collection, drawing on their experiences in the coming months. The Pandemic Papers will be an important part of the school and national reflections on 2020.
