18 boys and 3 staff ventured out to Cape Town, South Africa for 2 weeks in the middle of July for the Senior Hockey Tour. The party kicked off the tour by playing 5 fixtures in 5 days with wins over Westerbrook, Pinelands and Fairmont. We then faced Bishops, which proved to be a great contest ending in a 2-2 draw and our first loss came against Paarl Boys to finish the week.

In between the matches there were plenty of excursions lined up; Signal Hill looking over Cape Town and Table Mountain, Newlands Rugby Stadium tour, tobogganing, Hout Bay, Seal Island, a penguin sanctuary and Drakenstein Prison where Mandela was for the last few years of his incarceration. The middle weekend saw us relocate to Gondwana Game Reserve, which was an incredible experience and the highlight of the trip for most of the group. Onwards to York after this, where we played York High before moving to our final destination, Port Elizabeth. Our last match here, against Grey High, was a highly competitive affair, which we, unfortunately, lost 3-1.

En route we squeezed in a visit to a wildlife conservation sanctuary, ostrich farm and elephant sanctuary. In addition, we ran a couple of coaching clinics for local schools in Port Elizabeth who were delighted with the equipment and clothing donations that the touring squad had kindly organised.

Overall it was a brilliant tour in an amazing country. We experienced exceptional hospitality throughout the trip, and no doubt, the boys have made some memories that will last a lifetime.

Thank you to Mr Luke Stone, Head of Hockey for this report.
