The following weekend two MCS teams travelled to Kent to compete in the South East Region Schools Championships, alongside 20 other school sides from around the Midlands and South. Despite a tough draw, MCS 2 raised their game significantly, with good communication and well-organised starting repeatedly giving them the upper hand on several excellent teams for the early stages of each race. MCS 1 took advantage of an easier draw to win all of their races in the first stage and to set up a semi-final with RGS Guildford. MCS was rewarded for solid starting and a good turn of speed with another win, setting up a best-of-three final with Sevenoaks. The first race ended with a penalty on the finish line, but was won narrowly by Magdalen. Magdalen dominated off the start in the second and led round to take the win. It's the first time Magdalen has won the prestigious Hoad Shield: congratulations to Skipper Ben Treloar.
Just a week later, a single MCS team made their way to Spinnaker Sailing Club in Hampshire for the Schools Southern Region Championships. MCS won all their races in the league stages, progressing to a semi-final against Eton which they won comfortably. A best of three final against King's Canterbury followed, in which MCS again dominated, winning 2-0.

After half term the 1st and 2nd VI travelled to Bray Lake for the annual Thames Valley Regional Championship. Split into seeded leagues, the 1st VI won convincingly against Radley, Millfield and Rugby, qualifying for the Gold League. The 2nd VI finished second in their initial league after a narrow loss to Wellington, but wins against Eton B and Pangbourne saw them rise to second in their league. Then a disappointing loss to Claire's Court put them in the Bronze league for the afternoon's sailing.
The seconds won all but one of their remaining races, finishing the day joint top of their league on points but second to Eton B. The 1st VI carried all before them in the Gold League, failing to drop point in all four of their races. Wins against Eton, Wellington, Sevenoaks and Kings saw us qualify for a place in the finals. A win against Wellington in the semis set up a final against Sevenoaks, with MCS winning the first race and Sevenoaks the second. With exactly the same winning combinations but reversed in each race the cup went to Sevenoaks, the second race taking priority. |
