This year the Oxford Playhouse's Burton Taylor Studio was the venue for two stunning performances of Harold Pinter's final stage play, Celebration.
In an exclusive London restaurant, two East-End Mafia bosses and their loud-mouthed trophy-wives toast a wedding anniversary. At a nearby table, a young couple taunt each other with memories of past infidelities. The (somewhat eccentric) staff circulate, observe and interject, as three marriages become permeated by jealousy, suspicion and doubt. Pinter's play is an adult and outrageous black comedy, demanding a great maturity and depth of character from its cast. A talented group of sixth and fifth form pupils, under the direction of Mr Anthony, amazed audiences with their professionalism over the two nights in what was a hugely funny, imaginative and intelligent staging.
The production transfers to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August. |
