Historians head to Istanbul

Sixth Formers studying History at MCS enjoyed the latest departmental trip to Istanbul over the half-term break. Accompanied by Miss Bowen, Mr Thomas and Head of Department, Mr Hemmingway, the group had a truly historical experience in the heart of the old Eastern Roman Empire. The highlight of the visit was a guided tour around the old city, which took in the old church, Blue Mosque and the Sultans' lavish Topkapi Palace. Mr Thomas fired the imagination by talking of Emperor Constantine XI's last moments as he prayed at the church of Santa Sophia before being killed in the Muslim assault of the city. The group also enjoyed a river cruise along the Bosphorus, and a visit to Mehmet's great fortress Rumeli Hisari. Many thanks to all those in the department who made the trip a great success!
