Sailing - November 2009

On the 7th and 8th November, six MCS boys with Mr Corr and Mr Unwin ventured into new waters with the first MCS yacht sailing trip for the MCS sailing club.  The six boys spent the first day learning the ropes in exciting conditions, anchoring their 38 foot yacht in a tranquil bay for lunch and then battling strong winds and rain to spend Saturday night on the Isle of Wight.  On the second day the boys were given the helm and left much to their own devices, navigating their yacht around the Solent and Southampton Water.  The six boys demonstrated an excellent level of maturity and teamwork leading to a highly successful and enjoyable trip.

Kiss Me Kate - November 2009

The stage was set, after 3 months of preparation, 60 boys and girls took to the stage for the biggest spectacle MCS has ever put on.  Kiss Me Kate, a joint show between MCS and OHS had a tough act to follow, after Anything Goes' unanimously high reviews.  Every single aspect of the show was polished to perfection.  10 boys and girls worked tirelessly backstage to ensure West-End style scene changes, and 3 members of the High School worked days and nights on end to hand sew every single costume.  One boy spent his half term inside Big School hammering and nailing every inch of the set.  Towards the end of the rehearsals, tempers were running high, patience was wearing thin, confetti cannons were exploding left, right and centre, but in the end, it all came together to form the most amazing show we've ever put on.

Geography Quiz - November 2009

William Hardyman, Arthur Bickersteth and Matthew Darowski put in a magnificent performance against other schools in the area to win the Geographical Association Worldwise Quiz, hosted at the Dragon School.  The team demonstrated an excellent knowledge of current events and general geographical knowledge, some of which was up to GCSE standard questions in difficultly.  Well done to them all, Mr Lemoine and Miss Liddiard were really proud!

Theology debate with Headington school - 6th November 2009

A group of Magdalen Theologians and Philosophers put up a witty and compelling case for enlightened scepticism in a friendly debate with the Headington girls' school. The motion was 'This house believes life has no meaning'. Faced with arguments for a monotheistic God who guarantees a meaning, our team appealed to the doubts of the biblical Ecclesiastes who proclaimed, 'Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.' A verbal joust followed over whether subjective, personal goals in life can count as sufficient meaning. We hope that this will be the first of many theological debates between our schools.
