This Saturday gone saw the second block fixture against Rugby School. In a very exciting declaration game the 1st XI were put into bat on a green looking wicket and were quite aggressive early on, scoring 52 off the first 12 overs. However, three wickets fell reasonably quickly putting MCS in a difficult position. Jai Patel and Charlie Beeson steadied the ship for a few overs, and with 55 overs gone and a declaration required soon for the state of the match, Patel and Henry Anderson-Elliott launched an assault on the Rugby attack, Patel the last out for 84, the total score 230 a very competitive total.
MCS then took 2 wickets before tea, leaving Rugby the task of scoring 187 in around 35 overs. Sam Robins then took 4 quick wickets and reduced the home side to 120 for 7, MCS now sniffing victory. Rugby batsmen dug deep from here, leaving their last pair to bat out 5 overs to avoid defeat, with all but 2 fielders within 6 yards of the bat! Captain George Rendell then brought himself on to bowl and took the final wicket with just 2 balls remaining in the match. An excellent victory, with a very exciting climax.
