On the ball - April 2010

England hockey has ranked L4th former Eamon Devaney as the number one umpire in the South. In pouring rain and miserable conditions at the England Hockey Regional mini championships in London, the 14-year-old beat 54 other young umpires (mostly 17-year-olds) for the title. Eamon will now go on to the National Championships which are being held in Nottingham, on 15th and 16th May. Only one other 14-year-old has ever been asked to umpire at the Nationals. We wish him well.

Sailing British Schools South East Championships - April 2010

On Thursday Magdalen sent two teams to the British Schools South East Championships. Capricious winds ended the racing early, leaving it to the sailing equivalent of the Duckworth-Lewis method to decide between the top four teams: Magdalen 1 emerged a regrettable second to co-hosts Sevenoaks despite not dropping a point, and Magdalen 2 came a respectable 9th out of 21 teams.

More fickle winds blighted our local Midlands Championship on Saturday. The same method again determined the result; this time Magdalen 1 came out comfortably on top after again winning all their races with maximum points.

MCS 2 won 2 of 3, and MCS 3 – in their first ever competition - won 2 of 4, one of them against Uppingham 1.

Well done to all involved in both competitions. Skipper Will Lau is to collect the BSDRA Midlands Trophy.

‘Whizzkids’ - April 2010

Congratulations to two MCS boys who have won honours in a national computing competition. Matthew Daggitt won a distinction and Thomas Boby a merit in the British Informatics Olympiad.

India - April 2010

On  6th April, 42 boys and the Geography Dept. flew to Delhi for what we all expected to be a memorable trip – and it was!

After an overnight flight, our two days in the capital assaulted all the senses. With the temperature rising above 40°C every day, we first visited New Delhi and sites such as India Gate. On day two, the ‘real’ Delhi beckoned and the party left the coach behind to use rickshaws, allowing us to access the narrowest of streets. Particular highlights were a visit to the city’s teeming spice market and India’s largest mosque, Jama Masjid.

After a surprisingly comfortable overnight sleeper journey, we arrived at Ramnagar to spend two nights at the Jim Corbett Tiger Reserve. The highlight of this stay was an early morning jeep safari into the reserve; all boys saw monkey and some observed tiger paw marks and droppings – but sadly no sighting of the wonderful animal itself. The following morning, we took an elephant safari into another part of the reserve with one group observing wild elephant.

U13 South Hockey Championships - April 25th 2010

The MCS U13 Hockey Side played in the 7-aside South of England Championships on Sunday 25th April.  They were placed in a tough group for the first round but played well, gaining a draw against eventual champions Whitgift.  Some excellent hockey took the boys into the Plate semi-final where a determined and skilful performance saw them beat Dr Challoners 2-1.  After six hours in the Surrey sunshine the team had worked themselves into the ground and lost narrowly in the final, gaining the title of Plate Runners-Up.  The performance of the day came from goalkeeper Hugh Tappin and the star goal, a deflection into the roof of the net, came from Noah Stevenson.  This is an exceptionally promising side that has shown great potential all season.

MCS figures in Intermediate Maths Olympiad - April 2010

Congratulations to the MCS boys who took part in the Intermediate Maths Olympiad.

1500 pupils in UK qualified having scored well in the Intermediate Maths Challenge – among them, 15 boys from MCS.

Eight received a Distinction which is awarded to a quarter of the top participants.

Four boys did exceptionally well.

Eddy Grogan and Stephen Jones both scored 57 out of 60 making them joint 13th in the UK. (Stephen Jones is a year young for sitting this so it is an excellent result).

Freddie Illingworth and Michael Cui both scored full marks, two of nine pupils in the UK to score full marks.

Battlefields - April 2010

The History and English Departments took 19 U4th boys to the Battlefields of France and Belgium over the Easter holidays. The boys visited the battlefields of the Somme and Ypres Salient as well as a number of Commonwealth and German war cemeteries and memorials. There was a poignant Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate and visits to the graves of two old boys - John Callender, whose name is inscribed at Tyne Cot and Noel Chavasse VC, who is buried just outside Ypres.

Sailing - April 24th 2010

MCS wins The British Schools Dinghy Racing Association East Kent Regatta.

The 1st VI travelled to Canterbury on Saturday to compete against 13 Southern teams.

It was worth the fourteen-hour day: Guy Dixon stepped up to replace an indisposed Vice-Captain Ben Treloar and for the fourth year in a row Magdalen secured the title, resplendent in the new team kit.

Making the right moves - two MCS boy selected for England - April 2010

Jeffrey Levicki participated in the World Selection Tournament for the top junior players in the country. He came 4th in the U18 section and based on his performance, was invited to play in the Glorney Cup International Tournament representing England.

And the Junior School has its latest England chess player. Daniel d’Souza-Eva scored 3½/6 at the final trials in Liverpool at the weekend and has been selected for the England U11 Squad.

Goalkeeper Flanagan tours Holland and Belgium with The Swifts Trust - April 2010

First Team hockey goalkeeper Louis Flanagan was a member of The Swifts Trust tour of Holland and Belgium from April 6 to 12. The team consisted of representatives from some of the UK's leading hockey schools and had further MCS involvement through Head of Hockey Mr Todd Williams as Coach and the The Usher as Tour Manager.

The team performed very well and after a 4-2 loss to Tilburg in their first game together, they then recorded an impressive 5-3 win against the famous Bloemendaal club which was followed by a 2-1 win against the strong Orange Zwart club in Eindhoven, which featured an excellent performance by Flanagan in goal. After a training session with Australian Captain and 3 time World Player of the Year Jamie Dwyer, the tour finished with a 4-4- draw against Dragons in Antwerp. This gave the team an impressive 2 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss in their four games, giving The Swifts Trust a successful return to hockey and a wonderful experience for all the players involved.

2nd XI win first match versus Shiplake - April 2010

The 2nd XI put in a good team performance to win their first game of the season away against Shiplake. Harry Wilson (3 for 20) was the star performer as Shiplake were restricted to 141. Huw Charles, Harry Wilson and Jonny Attwood then all batted well, leading to a 5 wicket victory.

“Dirty Harry” - April 2010

Physics lessons at MCS are always hands on! The A Level class was learning about 4 stroke engine cycles and to visualise this Harry Steer brought in all the parts of a VW Beetle engine and put it together within minutes.

Easter Sailing - April 2010

Five boys took part in the second MCS yacht sailing adventure of the year, setting sail in the Solent during the last week of the Easter break.  The five boys competently sailed their yacht twice across the length of the Solent in the first day visiting Lymington, Portsmouth and sailing at night to Cowes.  On the second day they visited the multi-coloured sands of Alum Bay at the Needles Point and sampled island cuisine at the Folly Inn.  On the final day they visited the historic Solent forts before returning to Southampton.  All boys demostrated their strong ability to learn, excellent determination, and superb resourcefulness as they conducted their voyage.

Chemistry Olympiad - April 2010

Another good haul of medals (11 in total) was achieved by MCS Chemists this year – 1 Gold, 2 Silver and 8 Bronze. Boys had to tackle a tough paper set by the Royal Society of Chemistry and all performed very respectably. Richard Perez-Storey (U6th) deserves a special mention, being the top scorer from MCS with an excellent 42 of 61 possible marks and our only Gold medal winner. For the first time some L6th boys also attempted the paper and several performed exceptionally well and often outscoring their U6th counterparts! L6th medal winners were Adam Smith (Silver) Alex Black (Bronze) and Julius Luetcke (Bronze).

The Quaking Ducks - April 2010

Hal Dunnett, Alex Polywka, Alex Davies, Elliot Wenman and Nick Doig (aka the Quaking Ducks) entered the Oxford Jazz Festival Youth competition last week. Theirs was a late entry and they had no expectation of even doing particularly well. However, amazingly, they won!

Their prize is a paid gig at the Big Bang restaurant and a recording session in a completely extraordinary studio in Littlemore. Hal and Alex were at another jazz event later in the week and the organisers spotted them and whisked them off to be interviewed by BBC Radio Oxford - played on Sunday evening between 9pm and 10pm.

As if all that was not enough they have also been invited to be on stage with two "well-known" bands at an event which is going to take place just outside the Natural History Museum in an ark at the end of June!  It is to be put on by CIAO - the Children's International Arts Organisation.

Well done to all the boys involved.

‘Running in the rain….’

The end of the Hilary term saw the customary cross country event.

This year’s races saw 2 different challenges for the runners. The first being a modification of the course, now running through a farmers field on Christchurch Meadow. The other was, as can always be expected at a good cross country meet, the rain, which stayed for at least an hour of the afternoon!
