After being crowned Year 7 and 8 Oxfordshire Division 1 Champions in July 2018, the Magdalen College School Year 7 and 8 Tennis team were drawn against Wellingborough Prep in the Regional Knockout stage. The team (which involves current Year 9s as it acts as a continuation of last year) had trained hard for several weeks and knew that the fixture would be a very tough one.
The team, captained by Nathan Patel, and consisting of Guy Wilkinson, Ben Sims, Zain Ali, and Simon Ukrainets, were dealt a blow with Ben Sims pulling out with injury on the morning of the match. Wellingborough Prep arrived full of confidence with a strong team – their number 1 player being one of the top players in his age category in Britain. The match would consist of 6 sets, 4 singles and 2 doubles. Nathan Patel and Zain Ali produced convincing displays placing MCS up 2-0 early on in the competition. Wellingborough fought straight back with their superstar showing his class at singles 1 and Simon Ukrainets would lose a very tight encounter at singles 4. The score was 2-2 after the singles.
It had come down to the doubles events to break the tie. Ali and Ukrainets played masterfully and won easily. Wilkinson and Patel in the final match played tactically and won a dramatic 6-2 securing victory for the MCS team.
The 4-2 win secures a place in the last 16 in the UK and is a notable achievement. The next round will take place at Tipton Sports Academy on 16th November 2018 where the teams from the North & Midlands region will battle it out for a shot in the National Finals at the Macron Arena, Bolton in December 2018.
Congratulations to all boys involved and we wish them luck in the next stage of the competition.
