An MCS team of 12 boys competed last week in the two day International Team Chess Tournament at Millfield School. Originally with fourteen teams entered, three late withdrawals meant that some eleven teams competed at Millfield School in Somerset last week. The first two rounds were a qualifier for the main tournament with the top six teams going through to the ‘Championship’ (or top group). The MCS team finished 3rd in the qualifiers, easily reaching the top group event.

In the second half of the competition, however, this proved to be a very tough tournament, with teams from Belfast (Gonzaga) and Guildford boasting several 200+ graded English and International players. Beyond this, whilst most teams were largely made up of players between years 11 and 13, the MCS team’s oldest players were 5th form (year 11) with the majority of the team being made up of L4th and below.

Nonetheless, the boys more than held our own, finishing 5th overall in the tournament. Edison Xu was the team’s top scorer with 5/7, followed by Adam Hamid with 4½/7. Our top boards (Tom Shepherd, Edison Xu, Hari Selvaraj and Anthony Fox) did particularly well in the face of such strong opposition.

Congratulations to all the boys involved for showing such fantastic skill and perseverance, overall it was an impressive competition.
